Experiment - Braids Week 1

I fear my experiment might fail. I have washed my hair once and co-washed once already in the span of one week. My hair is frizzy and is starting to look rough. The goal was to maintain the braids for a month and experiment with styles in preparation for the winter when wet styling will not be a healthy option.

I like my hair in braids. I just miss my loose hair. It is for this same reason that my attempt at wearing twists for an extended period of time in the early part of the summer failed miserably. (I kept the twists for only 3 days!)

I am now acutely aware that I have NO cute hair accessories - not a flower, a nice headband that's not black, not a scarf ... nothing. I also need to learn to moisturize my hair better. My previous practices involved wetting my hair daily or at least every other day so my hair did not have a chance to get dry. That is no longer the case.

I recently purchased 16 oz. of unrefined shea butter. I am desperately trying to find coconut oil so I can make my own whipped shea butter. I am hopeful that this will solve the moisture issues I am having.

How do you keep you tresses moisturized? No1blkbeauty needs to know!

  1. You can spray your hair with braid spray. That's what I did when i had senagalese twists. As I was taking them out after a month, my hair was very soft and moist.

  2. I bought my coconut oil from The Vitamin Shoppe. I'm newly natural and had the hardest time keeping my hair moisturized. I have finally found a regimen that works. Afro Detangler conditioner (from growafrohairlong.com) and olive oil. It works wonders on my hair!! :-)

  3. Hi, I just stumbled upon your blog via 'Honey Brown Sugar' blog. Anyhow, love the info on your twistout/cowash.

I recently discovered Taliah Waajid 'Protective Mist Bodifier'. I actually have the medicated formula and love it for my scalp. This leaves your hair extremely soft. It has multiple purposes as well. I actually used it to detangle my neice's hair after washing/conditioning. Warning though, this is water based, so if you want to avoid shrinkage in a style you wouldn't use this.

  4. I love Nutiva's Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, I first learned about using coconut oil (extra virgin kind) from RusticBeauty on YouTube. I mix my coconut oil with extra virgin olive oil, wheatgerm oil and a small bit of castor oil. I use this mixture for hot oil treatments, add to my conditioners for cowashes, or just to moisturize my hair. This works for me.
